Bernina Bobbins

Bernina large-capacity Bobbins, electronically monitored bobbins, associated with the proprietary hook system used in certain BERNINA 8 Series machines, including the 820, 830 and 880.

Key points

• Large-capacity design: These bobbins hold substantially more lower thread than conventional domestic bobbins—up to about 40% more according to BERNINA documentation.
• Optical sensor system: The distinctive light-coloured segmented ring around the bobbin is an optical sensor surface. LEDs and photosensors in the machine use it to monitor the bobbin.
• Electronic monitoring: Compatible machines can detect the bobbin and monitor the lower-thread supply, warning the user when thread is running low.
• Electronic winding: The compatible bobbin winder can monitor filling and support selectable fill levels such as 25%, 50% and 100%.
• Orientation matters: Unlike ordinary symmetrical bobbins, these bobbins have specific positioning requirements because the optical sensor surfaces must be correctly aligned.
• Care is important: The sensor surfaces should be kept clean and free from scratches, stains, oil, adhesive and other contamination. The different colours visible in the photograph may indicate age, staining, residue or wear, although this cannot be confirmed from the photograph alone.
• Not a standard CB bobbin: They are distinctly different from the conventional BERNINA CB metal bobbin, part 0015367200, and should not be treated as interchangeable.

In short: these are specialised, high-capacity BERNINA bobbins that form part of an electronic lower-thread monitoring and winding system, rather than being simple passive thread holders.

 Hook system: Designed specifically for BERNINA machines using the CB (Central Bobbin) hook system.

• Material: Precision-made metal bobbin, providing consistent dimensions and stable performance.
• Design: The distinctive 7-hole construction is part of BERNINA's CB bobbin design.
• Function: The bobbin sits inside a dedicated CB bobbin case. As the needle carries the upper thread down, the CB hook catches the thread loop and interlocks it with the bobbin thread to form the stitch.
• Thread delivery: The bobbin thread is controlled mechanically by the tension spring on the bobbin case, helping provide consistent lower-thread tension.
• Machine compatibility: This bobbin is used across a large range of BERNINA CB-hook machines, including many older models as well as models such as the B 325 and B 335. It is important not to confuse it with BERNINA's larger Jumbo Bobbin/BERNINA Hook systems. 

The CB hook is a completely different system from a standard top-loading drop-in bobbin system. The bobbin and bobbin case are engineered to work together.
